A stand that fits on a desk is not necessarily a setup that fits. For a small workspace, compare the laptop, stand, keyboard, mouse, and cable route as one arrangement. This guide examines two specific desk-stand options using published dimensions. It is not an exhaustive “smallest stand” ranking, and we have not tested either product.

Dimensions come from Rain Design’s mStand page and its iLevel page. The manufacturer defines the products’ external dimensions; these figures are not the height of your laptop screen or a guarantee of clearance around a particular laptop.
The depth difference is a planning clue, not a verdict
The published depth figures differ by 1.3 inches. On a shallow desk that can be worth investigating, but subtracting that number from a photograph does not tell you how much usable space you will gain. The laptop may overhang, its screen tilts behind the stand, and cables need their own route.
For an initial layout check, make two paper rectangles using the published width and depth. These are conservative planning outlines, not exact engineering drawings of each base. Place your real keyboard and mouse in front of each. If the arrangement fails even as an outline, you can reject it before spending money; if it fits, you still need to confirm real product and laptop fit.
Choose the fixed option for a known position
The mStand is a candidate if you already know the position you want and do not need routine adjustment. Its shorter published depth is relevant when every inch matters, but it does not prove the whole workstation is smaller. Check the keyboard storage opening separately if that is central to your plan; outside dimensions do not specify usable storage clearance.
Choose adjustment only when it solves a real problem
The iLevel2 is worth considering if your setup needs changes in laptop angle or position. Leave room to reach its front slider, and account for the computer’s position through the intended adjustment range. Do not assume that the lowest and highest stand settings produce the same screen angle or rear clearance.
These are workflow judgments, not health recommendations. We cannot establish that one design reduces pain, runs cooler, or resists wobble better. Published dimensions and adjustment mechanisms do not answer those questions.
Plan the desk in three zones
- Rear zone: screen movement, plugs, cable routing, and any wall clearance. Measure from the wall or desk obstruction, not from the room’s open space.
- Center zone: the stand and the laptop’s maximum overhang. Include the charging connector and anything attached directly to the laptop.
- Front and side zone: keyboard position, ordinary mouse movement, and any notebook or other object you actually keep on the desk.
Check the arrangement in your normal seated position without balancing the laptop on an improvised support. The paper exercise is only for surface planning. If you cannot keep all necessary items within a usable layout, consider changing the accessory arrangement before selecting either stand.
A small-desk purchase checklist
- Exact laptop model and case measurements recorded.
- Published stand dimensions distinguished from actual support-contact geometry.
- Room reserved for screen tilt and connected plugs.
- External keyboard and mouse included in both budget and space planning.
- Selected product verified as mStand or iLevel2, not a tablet, swivel, or unrelated variant.
- Return terms checked in case the real arrangement does not match the paper plan.
