Choose a stand around your actual laptop and desk layout, not its product photo. A raised computer, an external keyboard, and a mouse can occupy a different footprint from a laptop sitting flat. The useful first step is to measure that entire arrangement. This is a fit-and-layout buying guide, not a hands-on review or medical advice.
Start with the laptop, including its case
Record the laptop’s width, depth, thickness, and weight. If it normally wears a shell or case, measure with that attached. Screen diagonal alone is not a complete fit specification: it says little about the body’s depth, the position of feet, or how it meets a retaining lip.
Next inspect the underside and edges. Mark vents, ports, hinge movement, and charging-cable positions. Compare these with the stand’s support areas and the maker’s compatibility guidance. Do not infer unobstructed ventilation from an attractive open-frame picture. Ask for a dimension drawing if a critical contact point is unclear.
Measure the working footprint, not just the base

Fixed or adjustable: buy the feature you will use
A fixed stand has one main position. An adjustable design offers a way to change the laptop’s placement, but “adjustable” may mean tilt, height, or both in a linked mechanism. Look for a diagram that defines how the stated range is measured. Do not treat stand height as the final height of the top of your laptop screen.
As examples, Rain Design’s mStand uses a fixed one-piece design, while its iLevel2 uses a slider to change the supporting angle. Rain Design calls the current iLevel its second-generation iLevel2. These are construction differences, not evidence that one is more comfortable, cooler, or steadier in your setup.
Desk use and travel are different jobs
For a permanent desk, prioritize the exact working position and where peripherals will live. For travel, add folded size, packed shape, weight, setup steps, and protection for the laptop to your checklist. A product called portable may still be inconvenient in your particular bag. We have not evaluated either example as a travel stand.
- Mostly typing on the laptop itself? Confirm that the intended position and manufacturer’s use guidance match that habit.
- Using an external keyboard? Include it in the cost and space calculation instead of treating it as an invisible accessory.
- Sharing one desk? Determine whether repeated adjustment matters enough to justify a more involved design.
- Planning to stow accessories underneath? Compare the actual opening with the accessory, not merely the stand’s outside width.
Before you order
Keep a short record of the laptop model, case, stand revision, available desk rectangle, and return conditions. If the maker’s broad fit claim does not answer your specific concern, send those measurements to support. No dimensional table can establish wobble resistance, hinge durability, or long-session comfort; those are limits of this research-based guide.
